How can I be proactive about my breast health?

With the exact causes of breast cancer still relatively unknown, our physicians at the Margaret West Comprehensive Breast Center are often asked – what can I do to take control of my breast health? While there is still a lot we do not know wbout breast cancer, it is certain that early detection drastically improves survival outcomes. In order to increase the likelihood of early detection, and subsequently, longer survival, our experts recommend the following:

Annual Screening

  • Our Breast Center providers recommend annual mammograms starting at age 40 years old if you are at average risk.
  • For those at a higher risk of developing breast cancer (family history, history of abnormalities, etc), we recommend talking to your Margaret West Comprehensive Breast Center provider to determine which screening tests are right for you.

Know Your Normal

See your Margaret West Comprehensive Breast Center provider if you notice any significant changes, including:

  • Lump or hard knot inside the breast or underarm area

  • Change in the size or shape of the breast

  • Itchy, scaly sore or rash around the nipple
  • Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast
  • Nipple discharge, especially that starts suddenly
